Tara Edwards defends thesis on nitrite oxidizing bacteria
October 31, 2012
Tara Edwards (UNLV) defended her MS thesis on nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) from terrestrial hot springs. Her study has probed the upper temperature limit of thermophilic NOB, which could represent an important perturbation to nitrification at high temperature. Her work provides a global perspective on this phenomenon that included study sites in the US Great Basin, Tengchong (China), and Armenia. Tara's work is the result of close collaboration with China University of Geosciences, Beijing, where undergraduate researcher Nicole Calica (REU student from UNLV) successfully cultivated NOB from Chinese hot springs.
